Modulation Paradigms

Instructional Tool

This Journal of Music Theory Online publication is designed to help music theory and aural skills instructors around the world teach the difficult topic of modulation. Modulation occurs when the tonal center of the music changes from one pitch class to another (Ex: Modulating from C major to G major). This tool provides instructors and learners with numerous examples to sing and play on a keyboard instrument. Furthermore, the tool cites "potential problem areas," highlighting particular areas in which learners may have more difficulty. Learners who use this tool have shown vast improvement both identifying and performing musical excerpts involving modulation.
