Analysis
Musicians enter the university with a wide variety of skillsets, and many do not properly conceptualize musical phrases. For students to become well-rounded musicians and successful performers, educators, and composers, they must be able to identify and apply knowledge of musical phrases.
Design
First, I approached this project with an educator’s mindset, asking myself...
What are the learning objectives?
How can I present material clearly?
How will I assess students’ ability to apply knowledge?
How will this training connect to previous training and future training?
Then, I gathered musical scores and recordings.

Next, I outlined the entire project from beginning to end.

Development
Introductory Slide

State Learning Objectives (Gagné's Nine Events)
Learners need to know the purpose and expectations of the learning experience.
Jingle Bells

Gain Attention (Gagné's Nine Events)
Effective eLearning successfully gains the attention of the learner early in the module. The first slide explores musical segmentation, with a fun reference to "Jingle Bells."
Cadences

Stimulate Recall (Gagné's Nine Events)
Pre-Training Principle (Mayer)
Learners who complete this module are expected to have a prior understanding of cadences. The eLearning is designed to assess students' prior knowledge, and a review is provided to students who do not pass the assessment.
Beethoven's Sonata

Signaling Principle (Mayer)
Informational slides provide visual cues that highlight essential material.
Test Your Skills!

Elicit Performance/Assess Performance (Gagné's Nine Events)
Apply and Analyze (Bloom's Taxonomy)
The eLearning module asks learners a variety of questions that tests their knowledge and application of musical phrases.
Quiz Review

Provide Feedback (Gagné's Nine Events)
A quiz review is provided for students to review the correct answers. Furthermore, students who do not pass are directed to review topics.
Implementation
Once the project was completed, it was assigned to students in their Blackboard LMS course. Results were made immediately available to me as an instructor.
Evaluation
Survey

Kirkpatrick
Learners are surveyed at the end of the course.
After the course...

Kirkpatrick
1) I analyze learners' success rates on the course.
2) I observe learners' performance on musical phrase tasks in the following weeks (assignments, exams, class work).
